HC rule on producing Uttan’s mother, aunt before it

The High Court on Wednesday asked the government to explain in 12 hours why it should not be directed to produce the members of Uttam Barura’s family before it to prove that they were not detained illegally.
Madhu Barua, 40, mother of Uttam, whose faked facebook page was used to stir up the September 29 attacks on the Buddhists in Ramu, and Uttam’s aunt Adi Barua, 26, were arrested on September 30 in connection with a case that was actually filed a day later.
Anisha, a two-year old daughter of Adi Barua, is now in custody with her mother.
Meanwhile, a Cox’s Bazar court sent Madhu and Adi to jail after one day remand by cancelling their bail, our Chittagong correspondent said.
Issuing a suo moto rule on Wednesday, the HC said it will order the authorities concerned of government to produce the detainees, if they were arrested illegally, and are not released by 10:30am Thursday.
The HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik and Justice Farid Ahmed asked the deputy attorney general (DAG) to inform the court about the legal status of detained members of Uttam’s family by 10:30am Thursday.
The bench passed the order verbally in a suo moto move following the reports published Wednesday on few national dailies including The Daily Star over the detention of Madhu, Adi and Anisha.
It also said that the rule issued by it will not be executed if the detainees are released by 10:30am tomorrow.
DAG Amit Talukder told The Daily Star that he informed the HC order to the superintendent of police of Cox’s Bazar over phone.
The Daily Star in its report under the headline “Innocent kept in police custody”, said that an investigation by it proved beyond doubt that the image of Uttam's facebook page, with the photo derogatory to the holy Quran, was fabricated.
Total 211 people were arrested in 16 cases filed in connection with the incident and many of them were taken on remand, according to the IGP.
The bench of Justice Mirza Hussain Haider and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo ordered the government to submit a report on investigation into the incidents before it in two weeks
A Correspondent from Cox’s Bazar reports that three more cases were filed with Ukhia police station on Wednesday evening on charge of torching, vandalising and looting Buddhist and Hindu temples on September 30.
