Dhaka, Nov 21 (bdnews24.com) – The Rapid Action Battalion has recovered three Buddha statues and arrested five people from Comilla and Feni, RAB-7 Vice Captain Nazmul Hossain says.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, he said the statues were seized in a series of raids in the last two days.
"The statues might have been stolen from Ramu during the communal attacks on Sep 29. We are verifying it," he said.
The five held are Mohammad Shahjahan, 54, Mohammad Musa, 56, Nur Alam, 45, Rafiqul Islam, 50, and Mohammad Anwar, 50.
Shahjahan, Musa and Nur were held from Feni, while Rafiqul and Anwar were arrested from Comilla.
Nazmul said they seized two statues and held the three from Feni's Jamtala upazilla in raids and on Nov 19 night. The remaining statue was recovered from Comilla's Chandina upazilla, based on information from them.
Religious bigots attacked Ramu's Buddhist community on Sept 29 and burned and looted many of their monasteries, houses and shops over a Facebook posting denigrating the Quran. The violence spread to Ukhia and Teknaf of Cox's Bazaar and Patia of Chittagong the next day.
The RAB personnel had recovered three bronze Buddha statues from Ukhia's Kutupalang Rohingya refugee camp on Nov 8. Two more statues were seized from Ramu on Oct 25 and from Ukhia on Oct 4.
