3 held with Buddha statue in capital

Dhaka, Nov 19 (bdnews24.com) – Police on Monday held three
persons with a Buddha statue, suspected to be one stolen
uring communal attacks in Ramu.

Bhashantek Police Station Officer-in-Charge Hosne Ara
Begum said they were held from a road in Bhashantek
area in the morning.

The arrested are: Mohammad Billal, Mohammad Ali and
Abdul Kadir.

Hosne Ara Begum said around 750gm Buddha statue
was recovered from them.

"They will be quizzed to be sure if the statue is one stolen
from Ramu during communal attacks."

The police officer said all the detainees were Bangladeshi
nationals.

Religious bigots attacked Ramu's Buddhist community on
Sept 29 and burned and looted many of their monasteries,
houses and shops over a facebook posting allegedly defaming
Quran. The violence spread to Ukhia and Teknaf of Cox's Bazaar
and Patia of Chittagong the next day.

Rapid Action Battalion recovered three bronze Buddha statues
from Ukhia's Kutupalang Rohingya refugee camp on Nov 8.
Two more statues were seized from Ramu on Oct 25 and
from Ukhia on Oct 4.
