A dawn to dusk roads and waterways blockade programme, called by United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) and its front organisations to press for the demand of an impartial judicial investigation into Kalpana Chakma abduction case, passed off peacefully in the district yesterday.
On Wednesday, Md Sirajuddaula Kutubi, additional chief judicial magistrate of Rangamati, ordered Masood-ul-Hasan, the superintendent of police to conduct further investigation into Kalpana abduction case and submit report by March 20.
Despite strong demand for judicial investigation by the plaintiff of the case and his counsels, the magistrate gave the order, showing reason of shortage of judicial officers and staffs for that task.
Demanding judicial probe into the sensational case, leaders and activists of UPDF and its front organisations yesterday brought out processions and held protest rallies at different places including Kutukchhari Bazar, Naniarchar and Kawkhali.
Vehicles went off the roads and water transports stopped plying the river routes from the district town to upazilas during the daylong blockade.
All business establishments in Rangamati town also remained closed.
Kalpana Chakma, an activist of Hill Women's Federation, has remained traceless since her abduction from Rangamati on July 16 in 1996.
