Sri Lankan at Risk of Being Beheaded for Praying to Buddha - H/T: Cecilie Gamst Berg

 A Sri Lankan youth employed as a domestic aid has been arrested in Saudi Arabia for praying to a statue of Lord Buddha, which is considered an offence according to Islamic Sharia law. According to the Bodu Bala Sena, the youth bearing passport no. 2353715 identified as Premanath Pereralage Thungasiri has been arrested by Umulmahami Police, which is a grave situation. While the youth is a Buddhist, the charge levelled against him is that he paid obeisance to the Buddha at the house where he was employed.

The Bodu Bala Sena organisation further said those employed in Muslim-majority countries are prevented from practicing their religious faiths, and if found to do so are punished severely. Recently a Sri Lankan woman was arrested for gazing at a child at a shopping complex, where she was accused of witchcraft, on the grounds that she had a black cord around her wrist.

On prior occasions too many Sri Lankan female domestic workers were forced to embrace Islam, and wear the traditional attire, while so far four Sri Lankan youth have been beheaded in that country. (Source: Ceylon Today)

Saudi Arabia is an Islamic theocratic monarchy where the religion of Islam is the official religion. Non-Islamic proselytism and conversions are illegal and conversion by Muslims to another religion (apostasy) carries the death penalty. Under Saudia Arabia Sharia Islamic law, children of Saudi parents are considered Muslim, regardless of the country or the religious tradition in which they may have been raised.

বৌদ্ধধর্মের যাত্রা শুরু হয়েছিল ভারত থেকে। কিন্তু ইতিহাস বলে, এই ভারতেই ভীষণ বিরূপ পরিস্থিতির মুখোমুখি হয়ে বৌদ্ধধর্মাবলম্বীরা দেশ ছেড়ে চলে যেতে বাধ্য হয়। অনেকে পুরনো ধর্ম ছেড়ে নতুন ধর্মও গ্রহণ করে। কয়েক শ বছর পর আবারও বৌদ্ধধর্মের দিকে মুখ ফেরাতে শুরু করেছে ভারতের হায়দরাবাদের অনেকে। টাইমস অব ইন্ডিয়ার খবরে আজ মঙ্গলবার বলা হয়েছে, প্রতিবছর শত শত মানুষ বৌদ্ধধর্ম গ্রহণ করছে। 
হায়দরাবাদ রাজ্যের একটি বহুজাতিক সফটওয়্যার প্রতিষ্ঠানে কর্মরত বি রাজকুমার বলেন, ‘আমি এক বছর ধরে বৌদ্ধধর্ম পালন করছি। আমার কাছে এটি খুবই অনাড়ম্বর এবং জীবন্ত। আজকাল আমার মতো অনেক তরুণ সুখশান্তি চান। আমার মতে বৌদ্ধধর্মই হলো এর পথ।’
রাজকুমারের সুরে কথা বলেছেন আরও শত শত তরুণ। ২০০২ সালে ওই রাজ্যে বৌদ্ধধর্মাবলম্বীর সংখ্যা হাতে গোনা যেত, কিন্তু, এখন তা ৩০ হাজার ছাড়িয়ে গেছে। শহরে এই হার অনেক বেশি। রাজ্যটিতে ১৫০টি বৌদ্ধ স্থাপনা আছে। এসবের মধ্যে প্রসিদ্ধ হলো হুসেইন সাগরের বুদ্ধমূর্তি। এ মূর্তিটি অতীতের গৌরবোজ্জ্বল ইতিহাসের কথা মনে করিয়ে দেয়। 
খ্রিষ্টপূর্ব পঞ্চম শতকে উপকূলীয় অঞ্চলটিতে বৌদ্ধধর্ম বেশ জনপ্রিয় ছিল। সে সময় বৌদ্ধধর্মের তিনটি প্রধান শাখা চার্বাক, মহাযান ও বজ্রযান চর্চা করা হতো। 
পরের শতকগুলোতে হিন্দু ও ইসলাম ধর্মের বিকাশ ঘটলে বৌদ্ধধর্মের চল কমে যায়। ঐতিহাসিকদের ধারণা, হিন্দু ও মুসলিম আমলে অনেক বৌদ্ধবিহারের ধ্বংস ধর্মটির পতনের মূল কারণ।
ভিক্ষু ও স্থানীয় লোকেরা জানান, হায়দরাবাদে বৌদ্ধধর্মাবলম্বীর সংখ্যা বৃদ্ধি না হলে হয়তো মঠগুলো আবার নতুন করে তৈরি করা হতো না।
মজার বিষয় হলো, নতুন ধর্মাবলম্বীদের অধিকাংশই তরুণ, যাঁদের বয়স ২০ থেকে ৩০ বছর। পরামর্শক প্রতিষ্ঠানে কর্মরত রাজা চৌধুরী বলেন, ‘বৌদ্ধধর্ম উগ্রবাদের বদলে একটি মধ্যম পথ অবলম্বন করে। আমার পেশাগত জীবনে এর একটি মূল্য আছে। নিজেকে স্থির রেখে কিভাবে ঝগড়াটে সহকর্মী বা উগ্র কর্মকর্তাদের সঙ্গে ভালো ব্যবহার করা যায়, তা আমি এখান থেকে শিখেছি।’ কিছুদিন আগে রাজ তাঁর স্ত্রী ও সন্তান থেকে আলাদা হয়ে গিয়েছিলেন। এ ব্যাপারে তিনি বলেন, ‘ধ্যানের মাধ্যমে আমি আমার ভেতরের সত্তাকে জাগিয়ে তুলতে সক্ষম হয়েছি। এরপর স্ত্রী ও সন্তানকে ফিরে পেয়েছি। এখন আমি একজন সুখী মানুষ।’
ভিক্ষুরা বলছেন, বৌদ্ধ দর্শনের প্রতি এত মানুষের আকর্ষণের পেছনে কাজ করছে বিভিন্ন চাপ, পেশাগত জীবনের ঝামেলা, পারিবারিক সম্পর্কের জটিলতা ও সমাজের সাথে তাল মিলিয়ে চলাসহ বেশ কিছু বিষয়। 
রাজ্যের সবচেয়ে বড় বৌদ্ধবিহার হলো মাহেন্দ্র হিলসের আনন্দ বৌদ্ধবিহার। এখানে প্রতিদিনই দর্শনার্থীদের সংখ্যা বাড়ছে। ছুটির দিনে তা অনেক গুণ বেড়ে যায়। এ কারণে বিহারে পরামর্শ দানকারী ভিক্ষুর সংখ্যা বাড়িয়ে দ্বিগুণ করা হয়েছে। 
আনন্দ বৌদ্ধবিহার ট্রাস্টের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা সভাপতি সংঘরক্ষিত মহাথেরো বলেন, ‘এখানে দর্শনার্থীরা তাঁদের পারিবারিক ও পেশাগত সমস্যা, সম্পর্ক নিয়ে জটিলতা, পড়াশোনায় ব্যর্থতা এবং দুর্বল স্বাস্থ্য নিয়ে আলোচনা করেন। এসব সমস্যা মোকাবিলায় তাঁরা কী করতে পারেন, তা আমাদের কাছে জানতে চান। তাঁদের সহায়তা করতে পেরে আমরা ধন্য।’
একটি টেলিকম কোম্পানিতে কাজ করেন রাজেশ সুঠারি। তিনি প্রায় এক বছর আগে ‘যুব বৌদ্ধ দল’ প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন। তিনি বলেন, ‘কীভাবে বৌদ্ধ ধর্ম পালন করতে হবে, অনেকেই তা আমাদের কাছে জানতে চান। বৌদ্ধধর্ম মেনে অনেক মানুষ এখন একটি স্থায়ী পেশাগত ও ব্যক্তিগত জীবন যাপন করতে পারছেন। অনেকেই তাঁদের আবেগকে নিয়ন্ত্রণ করতে পারছেন।’

আরব উপদ্বীপের দক্ষিণ-পূর্ব চতুর্থাংশে অবস্থিত মরু দেশ ওমান। মূল ভূখন্ডের শতকরা ৮০ ভাগেরও বেশি এলাকা মরুভূমিময় দেশে গত ৯ নভেম্বর ইতিহাসের প্রথম বারের মত অনুষ্ঠিত হলো বৌদ্ধদের দানশ্রেষ্ঠ শুভ কঠিন চীবর দানোৎসব।

এই মহতি অনুষ্ঠানের আয়োজন করেন “ওমান বৌদ্ধ পরিষদ”। অনুষ্ঠান অনুষ্ঠিত হয় ওমানের রাজধানী মাসকট এ অবস্থিত আল-মাসা হল প্রাঙ্গণে।প্রথমবারের মত অনুষ্ঠিত এই অনুষ্ঠানে ওমানে অবস্থানরত বাংলাদেশ, থাইল্যান্ড, শ্রীলংকা ও ভারতের হাজার হাজার বৌদ্ধ অংশগ্রহণ করে ওমানের বুকে বৌদ্ধ ধর্মের নতুরন ইতিহাস রচনা করে।

অনুষ্ঠানে থাইল্যান্ড, শ্রীলংকা ও ভারতের ভিক্ষু সংঘ পূণ্যময় অংশগ্রহণ করে অনুষ্ঠান সু-সম্পন্ন করেন।

অনুষ্ঠানে স্বাগত বক্তব্য রাখেন ওমান বৌদ্ধ পরিষদের সভাপতি প্রমতোষ চৌধুরী। অনুষ্ঠানে আরও বক্তব্য রাখেন সিন্টু বড়ুয়া, ঝুলন বড়ুয়া।

পঞ্চশীল প্রার্থনা করেন খোকন বড়ুয়া।

অনুষ্ঠান শেষে সাংগঠনিক সম্পাদক সিন্টু বড়ুয়া ও অন্যান্য সদস্যদের অংশগ্রহণে এক মনোমুগ্ধ বুদ্ধ কির্তন সন্ধ্যা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়।

ঢাকা: পররাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী ডা. দীপু মনি বলেছেন, পরিকল্পনা করে রোহিঙ্গাদের বাংলাদেশের পাসপোর্ট দিয়ে বাংলাদেশের শ্রমের বাজার ধ্বংসের জন্য অনেক ষড়যন্ত্র চালানো হয়েছে। আমরা যেখানেই পরীক্ষা নিরীক্ষা করেছি যেখানেই রোহিঙ্গা পেয়েছি। তাদের পাসপোর্ট বাতিল করেছি। কাজেই এ সরকারের আমলে রোহিঙ্গাদের সঙ্গে আমাদের ভালো ব্যবহার করা সম্ভব নয়। সেটা চারদলীয় সরকারের সময়ে সম্ভব ছিল।

বৃহস্পতিবার জাতীয় সংসদের বৈঠকে ফজলে রাব্বী মিয়ার এক সম্পূরক প্রশ্নের জবাবে মন্ত্রী সংসদকে এ তথ্য জানান।

মন্ত্রী বলেন, “আমরা আমলাতান্ত্রিক বিভিন্ন বিষয় নিয়ে প্রায়ই কথা বলি। রাষ্ট্রদূত হিসেবে যারা কাজ করেন তারাও আমলা। তাই তাদের কাছ আমলাসুলভ আচরণের বাইরে আশা করতে পারি না। কিন্তু আমাদের দূতাবাসের কর্তকর্তারা আমাদের শ্রমিকদের সঙ্গে কথা বলার সময় অত্যন্ত আন্তরিকভাবে কাজ করেন। দূতাবাসে পদায়নের সময় আমরা সাধারণত যাদের আচরণে কোনো সমস্যা নেই, তাদের মিশনে দায়িত্ব দেই। তারপরও যদি কেউ কর্মকর্তাদের হয়রানির শিকার হয়, জানালে আমরা ব্যবস্থা নেব।”

তিনি আরো বলেন, “বর্তমান পদ্ধতির এমআরপি পাসপোর্ট দেয়ার ক্ষেত্রে কোনো সমস্যা হওয়ার কথা না। প্রথম পাসপোর্ট কিন্তু বাংলাদেশ থেকে নিতে হয়। নবায়ন হয়তো বিদেশে করা যায়।”

আওয়ামী লীগের এমপি আব্দুল মতিন খসরুর সম্পূরক এক প্রশ্নের জবাবে মন্ত্রী বলেন, “বর্তমান সরকার ক্ষমতায় এসে দূতাবাস মিশনের কর্মকর্তাদের বিভিন্ন ধরনের সুযোগ সুবিধা দেয়ার ফলে তাদের মধ্যে অতীতের যেকোনো সময়ের তুলনায় কর্মচাঞ্চল্য বেড়েছে। আমাদের কর্মকর্তারা মিশনে সপ্তাহে সাত দিনই কাজ করে।”

তিনি বলেন, “বিদেশে জনশক্তি প্রেরণ প্রক্রিয়ায় জড়িত কিছু অসাধু লোকের কারণে আমাদের শ্রমিকদের বিভিন্ন ধরনের সমস্যায় পড়তে হয়। বিদেশে আমাদের শ্রমিক যেমন অনেক। আবার তাদের পরিচালিত সংগঠনও অনেক। শ্রমিকদের সংগঠনে কর্তৃক আয়োজিত বিভিন্ন অনুষ্ঠানে মিশন কর্মকর্তারা না গেলে তারা মাইন্ড করে।”

ফজলুল আজিমের (নোয়াখালী-৬) প্রশ্নের জবাবে মন্ত্রী বলেন, “বাংলাদেশ-ভারত সীমান্তে ছিটমহল সংক্রান্ত বিষয়টি দীর্ঘদিনের একটি দ্বিপাক্ষিক সমস্যা। এটি আমাদের উত্তরাধিকার সূত্রে পাওয়া। ১০৭৪ সালে মুজিব-ইন্দিরা চুক্তি অনুযায়ী এ সমস্যা সমাধানের নির্দেশনা থাকলেও তা পরবর্তীতে বাস্তবায়িত হয়নি।”

তিনি বলেন, “ছিলমহলের মানুষেরা নাগরিক সুবিধা বঞ্চিত। তাদের সমস্যা সমাধানে সরকার ভারতের সঙ্গে আলোচনা অব্যাহত রেখেছে। ভারত কর্তৃক ইন্দিরা-মুজিব চুক্তি ও এলবিএ-১৯৭৪ অনুসমর্থনের পর আশা করা যায় শিগগিরই ছিটমহল বিনিময়ের কাজ শুরু করা যাবে। যাতে সমস্যাটির সমাধান হবে।”

Weak animals fall prey to strong ones in the wilderness as big fishes eat up small ones in the pond. Animal world evolves around the subjugation of the weak but this tendency is heartrending if practiced in human world. Recently, some incidents of atrocities have made me disappointed. In our neighbouring country Myanmar, Rakhaines are inflicting grievous violence against Muslim Rohingyas. In Assam, majority Hindus are acting violently against the minority Muslims. Bangladesh is reputed as a secular and progressive country. However, the recent violence against the Buddhist community is a mark of shame on our forehead. These incidents are creating impediment to the process of socio-economic advancement and world peace. When human beings forget their basic identity as humans and confine themselves to particular religious or cultural identities, then their world becomes limited and their senses suffer in a narrow sphere. Present world is witnessing fundamentalism, misinterpretation of religion, which is causing anarchy in the world. But extremism in any form can't ever bring harmony and peace. Irrespective of race, culture and religion, our identity as humans can lead us towards a world of equality and peace.

'Bangladesh has worst civil justice'

New York, Nov 29 (bdnews24.com)—A report published by an international organisation said Bangladesh's civil justice system is the worst in the world. 

The 'Rule of Law Index 2012' published on Wednesday by the World Justice Project (WJP) said the country fared poorly in the eight areas including civil justice system that may influence establishment of rule of law. 

The WJP Rule of Law Index is a quantitative assessment tool designed to offer a comprehensive picture of the extent to which countries adhere to the rule of law, not in theory, but in practice. 

Bangladesh faces serious challenges in the dimensions of civil justice mainly because of the lengthy duration of cases and judicial corruption, the report said. 

In its third report, the organisation said, Bangladesh stands at 87th position in limited government powers, 89th in absence of corruption, 72nd in order and security, 87th in fundamental rights, 89th in open government, 90th in regulatory enforcement, 97th in civil justice and 83rd in criminal justice. 

The country scores poorly in government accountability and administrative agencies and courts are extremely inefficient and corrupt, the report said. 

The Washington-based organisation also identified human rights violations and police abuses as significant problems in Bangladesh. 

The report, however, said Bangladesh's best performance is in the area of order and security, where it ranks 72nd globally and ninth among low-income countries. 

The country has lower crime rates than many countries with higher levels of economic development, although mob justice is a persistent problem, it added. 

The WJP Rule of Law Index 2012 was prepared based on more than 400 variables drawn from the assessments of more than 97,000 people and 2,500 local experts in 97 countries and jurisdictions. 

The report said Sri Lanka was in a leading role among the south Asian nations. 

The organisation's founder William H Neukom said it is a big challenge for countries to achieve success in establishing the rule of law. 

He said every country had made progress to some extent in the fields and added that the index was not intended to show the countries down. Rather, the index intended at leading the countries to the path of correction.
