Criminals looted and burnt the houses of an indigenous family at Kasimnagar village in Birganj upazila under the district in brought daylight yesterday, triggering panic among the community.

Led by an alleged land grabber of the area and his two accomplices, around 15 to 20 men equipped with bamboo and wooden sticks attacked the house of Kazra Besra at Kasimnagar village at around 12:30pm, witnesses said.

The criminals assaulted the family members including females and children and dragged them out of the house. After looting things from there, the attackers set at least four houses on fire.

Before leaving the area, the criminals set fire to the kitchen at the house of one of the accomplices of the alleged land grabber, locals said.

"Nobody dared to come forward to help us as the criminals stayed here until the houses were burnt to ashes. The criminals set fire to the house of one of them with an evil intention to brand us as criminals," said Kazra Besra, the victim.

Local indigenous people said they informed Birganj police of the matter but the law enforcers arrived around 90 minutes later although the distance could be covered in 20 minutes.

Kazra, a day labourer, have been living on 15 decimal land with 12 family members including two sons and daughters-in-law. The land belongs to Kedara Besra, another indigenous person at Kasimnagar village in Birganj upazila.

"A local land grabber and his two accomplices have been intimidating us to leave the area in a bid to grab our land and finally they burnt our houses," said Kazra's son Bisu Besra.

Around 40 indigenous families live in the village, locals said.

Arzu Ara Begum, upazila nirbahi officer of Birganj, Shahab Uddin, additional superintendent of police of Sadar Circle and Shamsun Nur, officer in charge of Birganj police station visited the area yesterday afternoon.

Foreign instigation was to blame for the September 29 attacks on Buddhists in Ramu upazila of Cox's Bazar, said Home Minister MK Alamgir yesterday

People doing communal politics in the country were involved in the attacks, the minister told journalists at his office in the afternoon after a meeting with United Nations Resident Coordinator Neal Walker.

The additional divisional commissioner of Chittagong submitted a probe report on the Ramu violence to the minister on Thursday with 11 recommendations.

The minister said, “The culprits have been identified and, according to the report, the motive behind the attacks was to create instability in the country.”

He, however, did not disclose the names of the culprits. Nor did he detail the recommendations.

He said Neal Walker at the meeting expressed satisfaction over the Bangladesh government's steps taken just after the incidents.

During the September 29 attacks, 18 pagodas and about 50 Buddhist houses were torched or vandalised by Muslim fanatics. The violence was instigated by a faked Facebook page that showed an anti-Islam photograph tagged on a Buddhist youth's account.

The Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord was also discussed at the meeting, the minister said.

The issue of complications regarding land ownership in the Chittagong Hill Tracts may be addressed by reforming the land commission, he added.

ANOTHER HELD FOR ATTACK LINK
Police arrested yet another person on Monday night for his alleged involvement with the Ramu mayhem in Cox's Bazar on September 29.

Saleh Ahmed, 34, was arrested from a barbershop from the town's Lal Dighirpar around 10:00pm, reports our staff correspondent from Chittagong.

The arrestee has connection with Rohingya Solidarity Organisation (RSO) and had provided shelter to Rohingyas on several occasions, said Jashim Uddin, officer-in-charge of Cox's Bazar Police Station.

According to the police, Saleh's father had migrated from Myanmar before the Liberation War of 1971.

The arrestee, however, has a national identity card and a passport to prove his Bangladesh nationality, police added.

Police interrogated him till yesterday morning to ascertain his link with the violence.

Saleh is son of Mir Ahmed of South Pahartali of Sadar upazila.

Police sources said 239 people have been arrested in connection with the Ramu violence till yesterday.

গতকাল মঙ্গলবার রাঙ্গামাটির আসামবস্তী বুদ্ধাংকুর বৌদ্ধ বিহারে বৌদ্ধদের অন্যতম প্রধান উত্সব কঠিন চীবর দান অনুষ্ঠানে প্রতিমন্ত্রী এ মন্তব্য করেন।

তিনি বলেন, বৌদ্ধ বিহারে হামলার ঘটনায় জড়িতদের বিরুদ্ধে যথাযথ আইনগত ব্যবস্থা নেয়া হবে। তিনি দেশে সামপ্রদায়িক সমপ্রীতি রক্ষায় সকলকে এগিয়ে আসার আহবান জানিয়ে বলেন, সরকার দেশের সকল ধর্মের মানুষের স্বার্থ সংরক্ষণে বদ্ধপরিকর।

পরে আসামবস্তী বুদ্ধাংকুর বৌদ্ধ বিহারের অধ্যক্ষ করুনাপাল ভিক্ষুসহ অন্য ভিক্ষুসংঘকে চীবর দান করা হয়। এ সময় রাঙ্গামাটি জেলা প্রশাসক মোঃ মোস্তাফা কামাল, সাবেক পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রাম বিষয়ক উপমন্ত্রী মনিস্বপন দেওয়ান, রাঙ্গামাটি সদর উপজেলা পরিষদ চেয়ারম্যান মুছা মাতব্বর উপস্থিত ছিলেন।

     ঈদে নওগাঁর ঐতিহাসিক পাহাড়পুর বৌদ্ধবিহারে দর্শনার্থীদের ঢল নেমেছে। ঈদের ছুটি উপলক্ষে প্রতিদিন বিভিন্ন স্কুল-কলেজের ছাত্র-ছাত্রীসহ ভ্রমণপিপাসু মানুষের আগমনে মুখরিত হয়ে উঠেছে এ দর্শনীয় স্থান। এ বৌদ্ধবিহারের টিকেট বিক্রেতা মোতালেব হোসেন জানিয়েছেন, ঈদের পরদিন থেকে প্রতিদিন গড়ে প্রায় ৩ থেকে সাড়ে ৪ হাজার দর্শনার্থী আসছে। প্রয়োজনীয় উদ্যোগ নেয়া হলে দেশের এই অন্যতম বৌদ্ধবিহারকে ঘিরে উন্মোচিত হতে পারে পর্যটন শিল্পের এক নতুন দিগন্ত। নওগাঁ জেলার বদলগাছী উপজেলা সদর থেকে প্রায় ১০ কি.মি. উত্তরে অবস্থিত ঐতিহাসিক পাহাড়পুর বৌদ্ধবিহার। এর আদি নাম সোমপুর বিহার। ইতিহাসবিদদের মতে পাল বংশের দ্বিতীয় রাজা ধর্মপাল অষ্টম শতকের শেষের দিকে এ বিহার নির্মাণ করেছিলেন। বিহারের আয়তন উত্তর-দক্ষিণে ৯২২ ফুট ও পূর্ব-পশ্চিমে ৯১৯ ফুট। সমগ্র পৃথিবীতে এ পর্যন্ত জ্যামিতিক নকশার পূরাকীর্তির যে সন্ধান পাওয়া গেছে বিশেষজ্ঞদের মতে পাহাড়পুর তার মধ্যে সেরা। কারো কারো মতে এখানে একটি জৈন মন্দির ছিল। আর সেই মন্দিরের উপরেই গড়ে তোলা হয়েছে এ বিহার। এ বিহারে মোট ১৭৭টি ঘর রয়েছে। ঘরগুলোতে বৌদ্ধ ভিক্ষুরা বাস করতেন। বিহারের ঠিক মাঝখানে রয়েছে একটি মন্দির। মন্দিরটি দৈর্ঘ্যে ৪শ’ ফুট, প্রস্থে প্রায় ৩৫০ ফুট ও উচ্চতায় ৭০ ফুট। কালের বিবর্তনে মন্দিরের সবচেয়ে উপরের অংশ ধসে গেছে। বাইরের দেয়ালে বুদ্ধমূর্তি, হিন্দুদের দেবী মূর্তি ও প্রচুর পোড়ামাটির ফলকচিত্র রয়েছে। এসব চিত্রে সাধারণ মানুষের বৈচিত্র্যময় জীবনগাথা চিত্রিত হয়েছে। বিহারের মূল বেষ্টনীর দেয়াল প্রায় ২০ ফুট চওড়া। বেষ্টনীর মধ্যে রয়েছে আরেকটি মন্দির। এটি মূল মন্দিরের ধ্বংসস্তূপ বলে ধারণা করা হয়। এছাড়াও এ বিহারের চারপাশে আরো অনেক স্থাপত্যের নিদর্শন পরিলক্ষিত হয়। বিহার থেকে ১৬০ ফুট দূরে রয়েছে ইট ও পাথর দিয়ে বাঁধানো একটি ঘাট। এ ঘাটের পাশ দিয়ে এক সময় একটি নদী বহমান ছিল। ঘাট নিয়ে এলাকায় অনেক জনশ্রুতি রয়েছে। এ ঘাটে মইদল রাজার কন্যা সন্ধ্যাবতী স্নান করতেন বলে এ ঘাটের নাম ছিল সন্ধ্যাবতীর ঘাট।

নরওয়ের সরকারের আর্থিক সহায়তায় বাংলাদেশ সরকারের প্রত্নতত্ত্ব বিভাগের তত্ত্বাবধানে ১৯৯৩ সালে এখানে একটি জাদুঘর নির্মাণ করা হয়। এ জাদুঘরে খলিফা হারুনুর রশিদের শাসনামলের রূপার মুদ্রাসহ বিভিন্ন সময়ের প্রাচীন মুদ্রা, কয়েক হাজার পোড়ামাটির ফলকচিত্র, পাথরের মূর্তি, তাম্রলিপি, শিলালিপি ইত্যাদি স্থান পেয়েছে। এছাড়া বিহারের চারপাশের প্রাকৃতিক সৌন্দর্যও পর্যটকদের আকৃষ্ট করে। পাহাড়পুর বৌদ্ধবিহারে বেড়াতে আসা প্রকৌশলী আব্দুল আউয়াল জানান, তিনি ঢাকায় চাকরি করেন। ঈদের ছুটিতে গ্রামের বাড়িতে এসে প্রিয়জনদের নিয়ে এখানে বেড়াতে এসেছেন। তিনি অভিযোগ করেন, দেশের মধ্যে একটি অন্যতম প্রধান প্রত্নতাত্ত্বিক নির্দশন হলেও যোগাযোগ ব্যবস্থার উন্নয়ন নেই। নেই ভালোমানের হোটেল-মোটেল। উন্নত যোগাযোগ ও আবাসন ব্যবস্থাসহ আধুনিক সেবা নিশ্চিত করা গেলে এখানে দর্শনার্থীর সংখ্যা আরো বাড়বে বলে মনে করেন অনেকে।

People from different walks of life and faiths participated in a candlelight vigil at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital yesterday to show their solidarity with the Buddhist community.

As Buddhists all over the country celebrated their Prabarana Purnima festivities with a heavy heart bearing Ramu scars, students, prominent civil society members and common people joined hands to seek their apology for the recent attacks on minorities.

“We say that we are a country of communal harmony, and yet often this harmony is challenged. That is our failure,” said Professor Emeritus Dr Anisuzzaman of Dhaka University.

Rights activist Sultana Kamal said, “The moment we were singing songs of peace on the dais, I received a message that the Ahmedyia community came under attack in Rangpur.

“We need to be very aware that there are still elements in this country trying to create problems for a secular Bangladesh.”

“We can say a country is developed only when its minority rights are protected," said Humaira Islam of Urban Study Group.

Prof Serajul Islam Chowdhury, Hameeda Hossain, Sara Hossain, Khushi Kabir, Prof Kazi Madinah, and Prof Nasrin Ahmed also took part in the programme.

The event was organised with the participation of different organisations, including Urban Study Group, Ain o Salish Kendro, Nijera Kori and Transparency International Bangladesh.

Prominent civil society members on Sunday conveyed their solidarity to the Buddhist community on the eve of Prabarana Purnima celebration and highlighted the necessity of fostering a secular and inclusive Bangladeshi identity.

“I never think that in this country there is a division between 'us' and 'you'. We all have equal rights to this country,” renowned writer Muhammad Zafar Iqbal told a solidarity event at TSC of Dhaka University, organised to mark the festival which has been marred by the Ramu violence this year.

About the blame game centring the violence, he said, “If we keep on blaming each other for what happened, it means we don't really understand the problem, and if we don't understand the problem, we will never be able to solve it.”

Prabarana Udjapan Parishad organised the event to thank the journalists, politicians, rights activists, lawyers and others who stood up for Buddhists following the September 29-30 violence when at least 12 Buddhist pagodas and over 50 Buddhists houses were ravaged in Cox's Bazar and Chittagong.

During the event, a 100 fanuses (paper lanterns) and mongol prodeeps (lamps) were lit. Each of the fanuses had a name of an affected Buddhist temple written on it. Prabarana Purnima is one of the biggest Buddhist festivals.

Industries Minister Dilip Barua, among others, addressed the programme.

Alamgir has 'primary info' on hate attackers

Dhaka, Oct 30 (bdnews24.com) — Home Minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir on Tuesday claimed  to have collected primary information on those who carried out the communal riot in Cox's Bazar's  Ramu.  The statement comes exactly a month after alleged Muslim zealots vandalised, looted and  burned houses and places of worship in phases starting Sep 29 night.  "We are still working to identify those who had a role in the incident," said Alamgir at his  Secretariat office.  His made the statement based on a report the probe body formed to investigate the incident  submitted with a total of 11 recommendations on Oct 18.  Alamgir thinks the riot broke out following provocation by some local and foreign masterminds.  "Dirty politics and provocation for upsetting communal harmony were behind the breakout of the  riot," he added.  Alamgir said names of those identified by the probe would be made public gradually and that they  were working to take action in line with the investigation.  He castigated the opposition BNP for submitting its probe report to representatives of other countries.  He refuted the allegation that negligence on the part of law enforcers was responsible for the riot.  He, however, admitted what he called 'deviation' in role of some administrators, and promised  action against them.  A word of mouth that a Buddhist youth, Uttam Barua, had posted a photograph on his  Facebook account for denigrating Islam touched off the riot on Sep 29 night.  Buddhist villages and temples were set afire indiscriminately by violent the zealots.  The hate attack spread to Teknaf, Ukhia and Patia the next day. And why not? This year, three major religious festivals -- Durga Puja, Eid-ul-Azha and Prabarana  Purnima -- of the Hindu, Muslim and Buddhist fell one after another. But Ramu suffered a deep scar, too, this year. Its people are yet to overcome  the trauma of the heartbreaking attack on the Buddhist on September 29. The fire the communal forces set to Buddhist temples and homes has indeed burned more things than a place of worship or someone's dwelling. Those blazes have  wounded those parts of their hearts where harmony and joy lived. In a town where communal harmony has been so prevalent that its entire  population regardless of religion shares the joy of each other's religious festival,  it is the first time that the Buddhist in Ramu has curtailed their most colourful  programme, Prabarana Purnima. Also for the first time, the Buddhist community refrained from flying paper  lanterns (fanus) yesterday. The shell-shocked community will not float, as  they do every year, decorated ships on the Bakkhali river in Ramu today.  This festival is popularly known as Jahaj Bhasha Utsav. Instead of flying those traditional "fanus" yesterday evening, Buddhists wore  black badges to take to the streets in a procession, calling for peace. Organised  by Central Ramu Buddha Jubo Parishad, some 7,000 people from 14 villages  joined the march. "We have postponed the programme in protest against the violence. The  atmosphere is not favourable for the festival," said Swapan Barua, acting  chairman of Rajar Kul union of Ramu and also the president of the central  committee for the ship floating festival. Eid-ul-Azha, the second biggest religious festival of the Muslim, also came  and went without much festivity, as there was no spontaneous participation  of the people. In Ramu's Buddhist neighbourhood, it was never an issue as to who eats beef and mutton and who does not. Ramu's was an age-old tradition of sharing the  spirit of the festival, Buddhists visiting the Muslim homes on the eid day. "Many Buddhists used to join the festival [eid] wearing dresses like the Muslims  wear during their festival to share the joy," says Nitish Barua of Uttar Mithachari  in Ramu. Others say the Muslim and the Buddhist in Ramu have always spontaneously  participated in each other's religious festivals and their relations have been so  cordial that it was hard to separate them on occasions like eid, puja or Buddha Purnima. "It was the first time in my life that I spent the eid without spontaneous participation  of my Buddhist neighbours," Shamim Ahsan Bulu, a social activist and politician in  Ramu, told The Daily Star. "It was beyond imagining that our Buddhist neighbours and friends refrained from  visiting our home on the eid day, which was Ramu's age-old custom. Some of them  did come to my house having been unable to turn down my invitation. But the usual  cheerful spirit was missing," he added. On the night of September 29, Muslim zealots in their dozens burned to ashes 12  Buddhist monasteries and vandalised six pagodas in Ramu. The unruly mob also damaged dozens of Buddhist homes. It took several hours before the marauding fanatics could go on the rampage over a  faked Facebook page insulting the Quran. All this while, the local police and intelligence  personnel remained conspicuously inactive. Nazibul Islam, who was the officer-in-charge of Ramu Police Sation and was later closed,  is one of those who acted mysteriously during the overnight mayhem. Some locals chased  him when he went with a minister on October 1 to visit Shima Bihar, burned to ashes by  the bigots. Top police officials of Cox's Bazar and Ramu went to the Bihar on the eid day with some  food to distribute among the Buddhist. In their efforts to show things were all right again,  the law enforcers had a meal there with some Buddhist priests, including the chief of the  burned down monastery. While locals take it for a "drama," it was an embarrassment for the Buddhist priests. Progyananda Bhikshu, a priest of Shima Bihar, said they had some restrictions on taking  food. "And we told the superintendent of police [who went there] about it," he said, adding that  they still had to share the meal avoiding the chicken just to show courtesy. Police also sent some food to eight other Buddhist monasteries, much to the embarrassment  of the priests. Nurul Islam, a local Awami League leader and lawyer, doesn't take the police effort  positively. “I am sure the police have other motives for offering food to the priests at the temple," he said adding, "Looks like it was an attempt to soothe their anger against the police." Police and local administration were also desperate to persuade the Buddhist  community to fly "fanus" and float ships and offered to help arrange these programmes. But Buddhist leaders said they were not in a mood to celebrate the occasion amid festivity and that they would only offer prayers. In silence. “We were mortified to witness the incident of September 29. We have lost words to  describe our feelings," said Satya Priyo Mahathero, chief of Ramu Central Shima Bihar.

বৌদ্ধমন্দিরে হামলা: আবু ছালেহ দুই দিনের রিমান্ডে

মিয়ানমারের আরাকানি জঙ্গি সংগঠন রোহিঙ্গা সলিডারিটি অর্গানাইজেশনের (আরএসও) নেতা আবু ছালেহকে (৩৬) জিজ্ঞাসাবাদের জন্য পুলিশ আজ মঙ্গলবার দুই দিনের রিমান্ডে নিয়েছে। 
গতকাল সোমবার রাত ১০টার দিকে আবু ছালেহকে কক্সবাজার শহরে একটি সেলুনের দোকান থেকে পুলিশ গ্রেপ্তার করে। পুলিশের দাবি, রামুর বৌদ্ধপল্লি ও মন্দিরে হামলার ঘটনায় আবু ছালেহ জড়িত। ছালেহ দীর্ঘদিন ধরে শহরের পাহাড়তলীতে বাস করছেন। 
কক্সবাজারের অতিরিক্ত পুলিশ সুপার মো. বাবুল আকতার প্রথম আলো ডটকমকে বলেন, গত ২৯ সেপ্টেম্বর রাতে রামুর বৌদ্ধমন্দিরে হামলা ও অগ্নিসংযোগের ঘটনায় মিয়ানমারের রোহিঙ্গা সন্ত্রাসী ও জঙ্গিরা জড়িত থাকার বিষয়টি প্রকাশ পেয়েছে। ওই হামলার ইন্ধনদাতা হিসেবে পুলিশ আরাকানি নেতা আবু ছালেহকে গ্রেপ্তার করে। আজ দুপুরে আবু ছালেহকে কক্সবাজারের বিচারিক হাকিমের আদালতে হাজির করে ১০ দিনের রিমান্ড চেয়ে আবেদন করে পুলিশ। আদালত দুই দিনের রিমান্ড মঞ্জুর করেন। 
কক্সবাজার সদর মডেল থানার ভারপ্রাপ্ত কর্মকর্তা (ওসি) মো. জসীম উদ্দিনের দাবি, আবু ছালেহ আরাকানি জঙ্গি সংগঠন আরএসওর সাংগঠনিক সম্পাদক। রামুতে হামলার সময় তিনি কক্সবাজারে অবস্থান করছিলেন। তাঁর মুঠোফোন জব্দ করে এ ব্যাপারে আরও অনুসন্ধান চালানো হচ্ছে। গত ২৯ সেপ্টেম্বর রাতে কক্সবাজার সদর উপজেলার খরুলিয়া গ্রামে একটি বৌদ্ধমন্দিরে হামলার ঘটনায় দায়ের করা মামলায় ছালেহকে গ্রেপ্তার দেখানো হয়েছে। 
তাঁকে রিমান্ডে নেওয়ার আগে থানা হাজতে আবু ছালেহ সাংবাদিকদের কাছে দাবি করেন, তিনি বৌদ্ধপল্লিতে হামলার ঘটনায় জড়িত নন। আরএসওর সঙ্গেও তাঁর যোগাযোগ নেই। 
পুলিশ জানায়, গত ২৯ ও ৩০ সেপ্টেম্বর রামু, উখিয়া ও টেকনাফের ১৯টি মন্দির ও ৪০টির বেশি বসতিতে হামলা ও অগ্নিসংযোগের ঘটনায় দায়ের করা ১৯টি মামলায় এই পর্যন্ত ২৩৮ জনকে আটক করা হয়েছে। এর মধ্যে ১০ জন আদালতে ১৬৪ ধারায় জবানবন্দি দিয়ে নিজেদের নির্দোষ দাবি করেন।

স্বরাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী মহীউদ্দীন খান আলমগীর বলেছেন, কক্সবাজারের রামুতে বৌদ্ধ মন্দির ও বসতিতে হামলার ঘটনায় দায়ী ব্যক্তিদের প্রাথমিকভাবে চিহ্নিত করা হয়েছে। এখন ঘটনার পেছনে যারা ভূমিকা রেখেছে তাদের চিহ্নিত করার কাজ চলছে। আজ মঙ্গলবার সচিবালয়ে তিনি সাংবাদিকদের এ কথা বলেন।

স্বরাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী বলেন, রামুর ঘটনার পিছনে দেশ ও দেশের বাইরের উস্কানি ছিল। ঘটনার পেছনে নোঙরা রাজনীতি ও সামপ্রদায়িক উস্কানি ছিল। দেশে অস্থিতিশীলতা সৃষ্টি করাই ওই হামলার মূল উদ্দেশ্য ছিল। তদন্তে গঠিত কমিটির প্রতিবেদনে মোট ১১টি সুপারিশ এসেছে এবং সে অনুযায়ী কাজ চলছে।

বিদেশি কূটনীতিকদের কাছে বিএনপির নিজেদের তদন্ত প্রতিবেদন দেয়া প্রসঙ্গে মন্ত্রী বিরক্ত প্রকাশ করে বলেন, বাংলাদেশে সরকার নেই? রাষ্ট্র নেই? তারা তাদের কোন প্রভুদের কি দিয়েছে তা নিয়ে বলার কিছু নেই।

ফেইসবুকে কোরআন অবমাননার অভিযোগ তুলে গত ২৯ সেপ্টেম্বর রাতে রামুর বৌদ্ধবসতিতে হামলা হয়। সাতটি বৌদ্ধ মন্দির এবং প্রায় ৩০টি বাড়ি ও দোকান পুড়িয়ে দেয়া হয়। হামলা, ভাংচুর ও লুটপাট চালানো হয় আরো শতাধিক বাড়ি ও দোকানে। পরদিন টেকনাফ, উখিয়া এবং চট্টগ্রামের পটিয়ায় একইভাবে হামলা হয়।

সাম্প্রদায়িকতার অন্ধকার দূর করে মানুষের মনে সম্প্রীতির আলো ছড়াতে গতকাল সোমবার  ধানমণ্ডির রবীন্দ্র সরোবরের উন্মুক্ত মঞ্চ প্রাঙ্গণ একজোট হয়েছিলেন দেশের সাংস্কৃতিক কর্মীরা। প্রবারণা পূর্ণিমা তিথিতে বৌদ্ধ সম্প্রদায়ের প্রতি সহমর্মিতা ও ধর্মান্ধদের প্রতি নিন্দা জানাতে গতকাল সন্ধ্যায় এই মোমবাতি প্রজ্বলন পর্বের আয়োজন করেছিল । ধানমণ্ডির রবীন্দ্র সরোবরের উন্মুক্ত মঞ্চ প্রাঙ্গণ মোমবাতির আলোয় উদ্ভাসিত হয়ে উঠেছিল।

এ আয়োজনে উপস্থিত সম্মিলিত সাংস্কৃতিক জোটের নেতৃবৃন্দরা বলেন, রামু-উখিয়ায় ধর্মান্ধ দুষ্কৃতকারীরা বৌদ্ধমন্দির পুড়িয়ে বাংলাদেশের হাজার বছরের সাম্প্রদায়িক সম্প্রীতির ঐতিহ্য ধ্বংসের অপচেষ্টা চালিয়েছে। এ ঘটনায় বৌদ্ধ জনগণের পাশে থেকে দেশের সাংস্কৃতিক কর্মীরা ক্ষোভ, নিন্দা ও ধিক্কার জানান। নেতৃবৃন্দ অবিলম্বে সরকারের প্রতি এই ধর্মান্ধ উগ্রপন্থিদের দমনে কার্যকরী পদক্ষেপ নেয়ার দাবি জানান।

ফানুস উড়ানো হয়নি

শোকাবহ পরিবেশে রামুতে বৌদ্ধ ধর্মাবলম্বীরা প্রবারণা পূর্ণিমা পালন করেছেন। তবে শত বছরের ঐতিহ্যবাহী জাহাজ ভাসানো ও ফানুস উড়ানো উত্সব এবার পালন করা সম্ভব হয়নি। গত ২৯ সেপ্টেম্বর রাতে সংঘটিত সহিংস ঘটনার একমাস পর রামুর কেন্দ্রীয় সীমা বিহারসহ বিভিন্ন বৌদ্ধ বিহারে ধর্মীয় ভাবগাম্ভীর্য পরিবেশে প্রবারণা পূর্ণিমা পালন করা হয়।

এবারের বৌদ্ধ পূর্ণিমা উপলক্ষে বিভিন্ন বৌদ্ধ মন্দিরে আয়োজনের মধ্যে ছিল— বুদ্ধপূজা, মহাসংঘদান, ধর্মসভা, হাজার প্রদীপ প্রজ্বলন ও পুড়ে যাওয়া মন্দিরের স্থলে নতুন মন্দিরের প্রাথমিক ভিত্তিপ্রস্তর (হোত্তুর) স্থাপন। গতকাল সোমবার ভোরে রামু সীমা বিহারের অধ্যক্ষ দক্ষিণ চট্টলার সর্বোচ্চ বৌদ্ধ ধর্মীয় গুরু পন্ডিত সত্যপ্রিয় মহাথের’র সভাপতিত্বে এক ধর্মীয় সভা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। তিনি বলেন, এক মাস আগে রামুর হাজার বছরের বৌদ্ধ কৃষ্টি-ঐতিহ্যের স্মারকগুলো পুড়িয়ে ফেলা হয়েছে। বৌদ্ধ ধর্মে অহিংসার কথা বলা হয়েছে। তাই আমাদেরও শুদ্ধ হওয়ার জন্য দেশ ও মানুষের কল্যাণ কামনায় আমরা মহাসংঘদানের আয়োজন করেছি।

এদিকে গতকাল দুপুরে রামু বৌদ্ধ যুব পরিষদ প্রবারণা পূর্ণিমা উপলক্ষে এক মৌন র্যালির আয়োজন করে। রামু হামলায় জড়িতদের দৃষ্টান্তমূলক শাস্তি দাবীর পাশাপাশি সামপ্রদায়িক সম্প্রীতি রক্ষার মৈত্রীময় আহবানের বিভিন্ন ব্যানার ও ফেষ্টুন প্রদর্শন করা হয়। রামু বৌদ্ধ যুব পরিষদের আহবায়ক রজত বড়ুয়া রিকু বলেন, শোককে শক্তিতে রূপান্তরিত করে অহিংসার চেতনায় উদ্বুদ্ধ হয়ে দেশবাসীর সহযোগিতায় আমাদের এগিয়ে যেতে হবে।

গতকাল বিকালে সীমা বিহার প্রাঙ্গণে বৌদ্ধ বিহারের ভিত্তি প্রস্তর স্থাপন করেন পন্ডিত সত্যপ্রিয় মহাথের। সন্ধ্যায় হাজার প্রদীপ প্রজ্বলন ও সব ধর্মের মানুষের শান্তি কামনায় বিশেষ প্রার্থনার মধ্যদিয়ে শেষ হয় শুভ প্রবারণা পূর্ণিমা।

প্রবারণা পূর্ণিমা উপলক্ষে বৌদ্ধ প্রতিনিধিদের প্রতি প্রধানমন্ত্রী

প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা বলেছেন, জনগণের সঙ্গে লুকোচুরি খেলা বন্ধের পাশাপাশি কষ্টার্জিত গণতন্ত্র ধ্বংসের অশুভ ষড়যন্ত্র নস্যাত্ করতে ধর্ম-বর্ণ নির্বিশেষে সকলকে ঐক্যবদ্ধ হতে হবে। গণতান্ত্রিক ব্যবস্থা সুদৃঢ় এবং অসাম্প্রদায়িক চেতনা জাগ্রত করতে হবে। জনগণের ভাগ্য নিয়ে আর যাতে কেউ খেলতে না পারে সেজন্য সবার সজাগ ও সতর্ক থাকতে হবে। তিনি বলেন, কোন ধর্ম, ধর্মীয় প্রতিষ্ঠান ও ধর্মীয় অনুভূতিতে কোন ধরনের আঘাত আমরা দেখতে চাই না। সকল ধর্মের মানুষ অবাধ, শান্তিপূর্ণভাবে এবং উত্সবমুখর পরিবেশে নিজ নিজ ধর্ম পালন করবে।

রবিবার দুপুরে গণভবনে প্রবারণা পূর্ণিমা উপলক্ষে গণভবনে বৌদ্ধ ধর্মাবলম্বীদের প্রতিনিধিদের সঙ্গে শুভেচ্ছা বিনিময়কালে প্রধানমন্ত্রী এসব কথা বলেন। প্রধানমন্ত্রী বক্তব্যের শুরুতেই সবাইকে প্রবারণা পূর্ণিমার শুভেচ্ছা জানিয়ে বলেন, ধর্ম যার যার, উত্সব সবার। ধর্মীয় সম্প্রীতিতে বিশ্বাসী বলে তার সরকার ধর্ম, ধর্মীয় প্রতিষ্ঠান এবং ধর্মীয় অনুভূতিতে কোন প্রকার আঘাত পছন্দ করে না। সকল ধর্মের মানুষ উত্সবমুখর পরিবেশে যাতে উত্সব পালন করতে পারে, সে পরিবেশ আমরা সৃষ্টি করেছি। তিনি বলেন, সবাই মিলে এই দেশটাকে স্বাধীন করেছি। সবাই এই দেশে সমান অধিকার নিয়ে থাকবে। তিনি বলেন, জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের দেয়া সংবিধানে এসব অধিকার নিশ্চিত করা হলেও ১৯৭৫ সালে তার হত্যাকাণ্ডের পর সামরিক শাসকরা সংবিধান কাটাছেড়া ও পরিবর্তন করে এসব অধিকার কেড়ে নেয়। ২০০৮ সালের ২৯ ডিসেম্বর নির্বাচনে আওয়ামী লীগকে নিরঙ্কুশভাবে বিজয়ী করার জন্য জনগণের প্রতি আন্তরিক কৃতজ্ঞতা প্রকাশ করে শেখ হাসিনা বলেন, এই বিজয় মুক্তিযুদ্ধের চেতনা পুনরুদ্ধার ও জনগণের সমঅধিকার নিশ্চিত করার ক্ষেত্রে সহায়ক হয়েছে। সংবিধানের পঞ্চদশ সংশোধনীর মাধ্যমে জনগণের সমঅধিকার নিশ্চিত এবং অবৈধভাবে রাষ্ট্রীয় ক্ষমতা দখলের পথ বন্ধ হয়েছে।

প্রধানমন্ত্রী বলেন, সকল ধর্মেই মানবতাকে গুরুত্ব দেয়া হয়েছে। অসাম্প্রদায়িকতার কথা বলা হয়েছে। এক ধর্মের প্রতি আরেক ধর্মের সম্মান দেখানোর কথা বলা হয়েছে, রয়েছে শান্তির বার্তা। কিন্তু মাঝে মধ্যে আমাদের সমাজে এ ধরনের আত্মঘাতী ঘটনা ঘটে, যে পথ ধরে আসে অশান্তি এবং সেখানে থাকে না কোন ভ্রাতৃত্ববোধ। অনেকের মধ্যে চলে আসে পশুত্ব। তিনি ধর্মীয় সম্প্রীতি বজায় রাখতে সকলের প্রতি আহ্বান জানান। রামুর ঘটনায় সাংস্কৃতিক ঐতিহ্য হারানোর কথা উল্লেখ করে প্রধানমন্ত্রী বলেন, আপনাদের কষ্ট— আপনারা ধর্মীয় প্রতিষ্ঠান হারিয়েছেন। আর আমরা শত বছরের ধর্মীয়, সাংস্কৃতিক ও ঐতিহাসিক ঐতিহ্য হারালাম। তিনি বলেন, এভাবে গান পাউডার ছিঁটিয়ে অগ্নিসংযোগের ঘটনা ঘটতে পারে বলে কেউ ভাবেনি। রামুতে ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত বৌদ্ধ বিহার পরিদর্শন করতে গিয়ে তার চোখে পানি চলে এসেছিলো উল্লেখ করে প্রধানমন্ত্রী বলেন, বৌদ্ধ পল্লীতে হামলার তদন্ত চলছে। কারা কোন উদ্দেশ্যে এই পৈশাচিক ঘটনা ঘটালো তা তদন্তে বেরিয়ে আসবে এবং জড়িত অপরাধীদের উপযুক্ত শাস্তি দেয়া হবে।

সেনাবাহিনী, বিজিবি, আইন-শৃঙ্খলা রক্ষাকারী বাহিনীসহ আওয়ামী লীগের নেতা-কর্মীরা ওই হামলা প্রতিহত না করলে ক্ষয়ক্ষতির পরিমাণ আরো বাড়তো। তিনি বলেন, কোনো মেয়ে যেনো ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত না হয় তা নিশ্চিত করা হয়েছে। ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত প্যাগোডাগুলো সেনাবাহিনী এবং বিজিবি নির্মাণ করে দেবে বলে তিনি জানান।

প্রধানমন্ত্রী তার সরকারের সময়ে অর্থনীতিসহ বিভিন্ন খাতে সফলতা ও উন্নয়নের কথা তুলে ধরে বলেন, সরকার ইতিমধ্যে জনগণের ভোটাধিকার প্রতিষ্ঠা করেছে এবং গত চার বছরে অবাধ, নিরপেক্ষ ও শান্তিপূর্ণভাবে দেশে ছয় শতাধিক নির্বাচন অনুষ্ঠানের উজ্জ্বল দৃষ্টান্ত স্থাপন করেছে। তিনি বলেন, সরকার এমন একটি পরিবেশ সৃষ্টি করতে কঠোর পরিশ্রম করে যাচ্ছে যেখানে ধর্ম-বর্ণ-নির্বিশেষে সকল মানুষ তাদের সমঅধিকার ভোগ করবে এবং পূর্ণ স্বাধীনতাসহ উত্সবমুখর পরিবেশে তাদের ধর্ম পালন করবে। জনগণের মৌলিক ও সাংবিধানিক অধিকার নিশ্চিত করতে সরকার নিরলসভাবে কাজ করে যাচ্ছে।

অনুষ্ঠানে প্রবারণা পূর্ণিমায় ফানুস ওড়ানোর ঘোষণা দেন বৌদ্ধ ধর্মের সর্বোচ্চ ধর্মগুরু সংঘরাজ ধর্মসেনা মহাথেরো। বৌদ্ধ সমিতির চেয়ারম্যান অজিত রঞ্জন বড়ুয়া প্রবারণা পূর্ণিমা উপলক্ষে সরকারি ছুটি ঘোষণার জন্য প্রধানমন্ত্রীর প্রতি আহ্বান জানান। এই আহ্বানের জবাবে প্রবারণা পূর্ণিমা উপলক্ষে ঐচ্ছিক ছুটি থাকার কথা উল্লেখ করে প্রধানমন্ত্রী বলেন, যারা সরকারি চাকরি করেন, তারা সবাই ঐচ্ছিক ছুটি নিতে পারেন। আপনাদের ছুটি আমরা নিয়ে কী করবো?

রাজধানী ঢাকায় আগামী ৯ নভেম্বর অনুষ্ঠিতব্য আন্তর্জাতিক বৌদ্ধ সম্মেলন উপলক্ষে প্রধানমন্ত্রীর সহযোগিতা চান শিল্পমন্ত্রী দিলীপ বড়ুয়া। এ সময় প্রধানমন্ত্রী বলেন, যতটুকু সহযোগিতা করা প্রয়োজন তা করা হবে।

অনুষ্ঠানে আরো বক্তব্য রাখেন বৌদ্ধ ফেডারেশনের সভাপতি বিশ্বপতি বড়ুয়া, আওয়ামী লীগের উপদেষ্টামন্ডলীর সদস্য ড. কনক কুমার বড়ুয়া, বৌদ্ধ ধর্মীয় কল্যাণ ট্রাস্টের ভাইস চেয়ারম্যান সজল তালুকদার বড়ুয়া, ঢাকা বৌদ্ধ বিহারের অধ্যক্ষ ধর্মমিত্র মহাথেরো প্রমুখ। অনুষ্ঠান পরিচালনা করেন ব্যারিস্টার বিপ্লব বড়ুয়া ও বৌদ্ধ কল্যাণ ট্রাস্টের সদস্য সুপ্তা ভূষণ বড়ুয়া।

আজ শুরু হচ্ছে কঠিন চীবর দান উত্সব

আজ মঙ্গলবার থেকে পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রামের খাগড়াছড়ি, রাঙ্গামাটি ও বান্দরবান জেলার ২৫টি উপজেলায় বৌদ্ধ বিহারগুলোতে অনুষ্ঠিত হবে বৌদ্ধ সমপ্রদায়ের প্রধান দানোত্সব কঠিন চীবর দানোত্সব। এ উপলক্ষে বৌদ্ধ ধর্মাবলম্বীদের পাড়ায়-পাড়ায় শেষ হয়েছে কঠিন চীবর দানোত্সবের সার্বিক প্রস্তুতি। আজ পার্বত্য খাগড়াছড়ি জেলার দীঘিনালা উপজেলার বাবুছড়ার সাধনাটিলা বন বিহারে মহাপরিনির্বাণ লাভকৃত বৌদ্ধ ধর্মীয় গুরু বনভন্তের শিষ্যসঙ্গের উপস্থিতিতে মাসব্যাপী কঠিন চীবর দানোত্সবের সূচনা হবে। এ উত্সব শেষ হবে ২৭ নভেম্বর কাউখালীর বিনয়াঙ্কুর, বাঘাইছড়ির বনানী ও বরকলের আইমাছড়া বন বিহারে। রাঙ্গামাটির রাজবন বিহারে আগামী ২২ ও ২৩ নভেম্বর অনুষ্ঠিত হবে সর্ববৃহত্ দানোত্সব। ৮ নভেম্বর খাগড়াছড়ির ধর্মপুর আর্য্য বন বিহারে অনুষ্ঠিত হবে দ্বিতীয় বৃহত্তম দানোত্সব। তবে এ উত্সবকে ঘিরে বরাবরের মতো বৌদ্ধ ধর্মাবলম্বী দায়ক-দায়িকা, উপাসক-উপাসিকার অংশগ্রহণে বিহার প্রাঙ্গণ ধর্মীয় উত্সাহ-উদ্দীপনায় মুখরিত হয়ে উঠার কথা থাকলেও রাঙ্গামাটি কলেজের সহিংসতা এবং রামু আর উখিয়ার হামলার ঘটনায় পাহাড়ি এ জনপদের বৌদ্ধদের মনে এখনো নানা আশংকা ও ভীতি কাজ করছে। অপরদিকে রামু ও উখিয়ার ঘটনার প্রতিবাদে এবারের কঠিন চীবর দানোত্সবে ফানুস উড়ানো ও ধর্মীয় সাংস্কৃতিক আনুষ্ঠানিকতার কর্মসূচি বর্জনের ঘোষণাকে কেন্দ্র করে এ ভয় ও সংশয় আরো বেড়েছে।

বৌদ্ধ ভিক্ষু সংঘের দীর্ঘ তিনমাস বর্ষাবাস পালনের পর প্রতি বাংলা বছরের আশ্বিনী পূর্ণিমায় আশ্বিন ও কার্তিক মাসে বৌদ্ধ ধর্মাবলম্বী বিশেষ করে চাকমা, মারমা, তঞ্চংগ্যা, চাক ও বড়ুয়া সমপ্রদায় তাদের অন্যতম প্রধান ধর্মীয় উত্সব এ কঠিন চীবর দান পালন করে থাকেন। ধর্মীয় এই উত্সব পালনের জন্য বাড়িতে-বাড়িতে, পাড়ায়-পাড়ায় ও ধর্মীয় প্রতিষ্ঠানসমূহে এ সময়ে বিরাজ করে উত্সবের আমেজ। বৌদ্ধ ধর্মাবলম্বীদের মনে এই সময়ে একটি ধারণা শুধু বিরাজ করে, কিভাবে শ্রদ্ধেয় ভিক্ষু সংঘকে একটি কিছু দান করে পুণ্য অর্জন করা যায়। আর এজন্য শিশু থেকে শুরু করে আবালবৃদ্ধবণিতা কঠিন চীবর দানোত্সবে নানা দ্রব্যাদি ভিক্ষু সংঘের উদ্দেশে দান করে থাকেন। ভক্তি-শ্রদ্ধা সহকারে দায়ক-দায়িকারা এ সময়ে মন্দির ও বিহারে গিয়ে মহামতি ভগবান বুদ্ধের প্রতি ও অনুত্তর ভিক্ষু সংঘের প্রতি সশ্রদ্ধচিত্তে প্রণাম জানিয়ে পঞ্চশীল ও অষ্টশীল গ্রহণ করে থাকেন।

4. The key to the elimination of craving is “The Noble Eightfold Path”.
(3) Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood him
The Noble Eightfold Path (ariya atthangika magga) is summarised as follows and defines steps 5 thru 12

1. Right view

• understanding suffering
• understanding its origin
• understanding its cessation
• understanding the way leading to its cessation.

(4) Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves
2. Right intention

• intention of renunciation
• intention of good will
• intention of harmlessness

(5) Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
(6) Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character
(7) Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
3. Right speech

• abstaining from false speech
• abstaining from slanderous speech
• abstaining from harsh speech
• abstaining from idle chatter

4. Right action

• abstaining from taking life
• abstaining from stealing
• abstaining from sexual misconduct

(8) Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
(9) Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
5. Right livelihood

• giving up wrong livelihood
• one earns one’s living by a right form of livelihood

6. Right effort

• the effort to restrain defilements
• the effort to abandon defilements
• the effort to develop wholesome states
• the effort to maintain wholesome states

(10) Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it
7. Right mindfulness

• mindful contemplation of the body
• mindful contemplation of feelings
• mindful contemplation of the mind
• mindful contemplation of phenomena

(11) Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
8. Right concentration

• the first jhana
• the second jhana
• the third jhana
• the fourth jhana

(12) Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our afairs.

Baruas in Bangladesh and in assam

Barua people are the 100% Buddhist
people in  Bangladesh. Who are Buddhists by Birth.

      Barua (not at all to be confused with Assamese Barua) are a Bengali speaking Buddhist community in Bangladesh. They mainly live in the Chittagong region. Many moved to Kolkata, India after partition of India in 1947; many also moved to England in the 1950s and 1960s. The plain Buddhists of Bangladesh known as the Barua-Buddhist are the ancient peoples of Bangladesh who have lived here for five thousand years according to Arakanese chronology. They insist that they came from the Aryavarta or the country of the Aryans which is practically identical to the country later known as the Majjhimadesh or Madhyadesh in Pali literature. Bengali speaking Barua people of Chittagong are all Buddhist by religion, unlike Hindu Barua of Assam who are gen

erally Brahmins or Ahom or may belong to any other general caste in India.

     All the publications and articles for the history of Barua Buddhist community are partial snap-shot of different thoughts, ideas and perhaps based on the legendary story from ancestors but a solid research work based on archaeological and historical background is still pending. Barua is the last name of Bengali speaking People who are almost exclusively Buddhist and are concentrated heavily in the Chittagong and nearby hill tracts of Bangladesh, who migrated to Rangoon, Calcutta and many other cities during British Raj as Chefs and restaurant owners. 

Ajit K. Barua a Bangladeshi was a freedom fighter in 1971 sector-1 graduated from Dhaka university and later he came to Japan and living for the last 26 years. He is the founder Chairperson of Bangladesh Scholarship Council (BSC)recognized by the United Nations. This organization distributed more than 30 million Taka to the talented poor students throughout the country at the university level till 2008. He got married with Swapna Barua hails from Chittagong. They have two daughters Asmita Barua, Dipanita Barua and only son Bijoy Barua Rajeev Barua Associate Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Maryland, College Park.

    But not all people are from Bangladesh  Some of them are from Assam. Many centuries ago in assam 'baishnab dharma' when came into existence the people of assam were forcefully being converted into their religion. Due to which some Buddhist people (Barua) ran to Bangladesh and took their shelter and became the people of bangladesh but in the later years some of them came back to assam via west Bengal. The Bengali Baruas or the Buddhist baruas of assam have a mixed similarity of traditions of ahom for eg: both call their god as 'gohain' but pray to different gods. Similarity among the food habits of the people of Bangladesh and west Bengal  their mother tongue similar to the people of Chittagong  their dressings similar to the people of west Bengal.

Exactly a month into the Ramu attack, the Buddhists will celebrate one of their biggest religious festivals, Shubho Probarana Purnima, across the country on October 29.

The celebration this year however will be marked by a pall of gloom. In some places, the minority people will observe the festival in a subdued manner as a sign of protest against the communal onslaught on them.

It was also the night of another festival of Buddhists, Madhu Purnima, on September 29 when Muslim zealots launched the attacks on Buddhist pagodas and houses in Ramu.

The unprecedented communal onslaught has forced Buddhist leaders in some places to curtail celebratory programmes of Probarana Purnima.

Earlier Buddhists leaders in Chittagong had decided not to fly paper lanterns (fanus), the most attractive celebratory event of Probarana Purnima, to protest the Ramu attack. They however called off the decision later after security assurance from the government.

Though the Buddhists in Bandarban, Rangamati and Khagrachhari will fly fanus, they have curtailed their other colourful traditional cultural programmes.

In some other places, the community leaders have chalked out different protest programmes on the occasion of Probarana Purnima.

Probarana Udjapan Parisad in Dhaka has decided to hold a solidarity rally on October 28 in front of TSC of Dhaka University to protest the attack. They will also fly fanus dedicating them to the ruined Buddhist pagodas in Ramu and elsewhere.

On September 29, the attackers torched 12 pagodas, ransacked six more in Ramu and ravaged six Buddhist pagodas and a Hindu temple in Ukhia the next day. They also destroyed more than 50 Buddhist houses in Ramu and Teknaf of Cox's Bazar.
